Over the years I have received invitations like the above from several companies and leaders inviting me to speak with very good monetary rewards. Here is my reply to all of them on my view on speaking fees. However, due to my present position as The Founder for a MLM company, I no longer speak for other MLM companies. I only do it now for the Direct Selling Association or organizations not involved in MLM.
I regret to say that I have to turn down your offer. Over the last 30 years in MLM, all my training is free and I have not made a single cent from them. I do not charge for speaking (except for the brief period when I was a MLM consultant)
People who invite me have to sell tickets at the minimum and are not allowed to pocket any money left over. It goes back to their group. They have to report to me their expected expenses and I will then approve the price they sell their tickets for. The organizers pay for my airfare and accommodation if they can afford it and if they cannot, I will take care of my own expenses. I travel cheap, normally economy or on Eva Airlines, Deluxe class, a fare between economy and business class (Taipei to LA will only cost about US$200 more. More airlines should have this class) If I choose to travel Business class I always pay for the difference between Business and Economy.
I also do not allow my leaders to pocket any money from training. Left over has to go back to the group for future use.
This issue is one of the few occasions in MLM where there is no right or wrong answer. It is up to the leaders to choose.
1. Many leaders in some companies do not make enough income from their bonuses because of poorly written marketing plans or low percentage pay out because of the greedy MLM owners who try and take everything. As a result, making money from training, tapes and books is a very important income to these leaders. It is not good for any company or organization where the high pin leaders are not living a proper lifestyle in relation to their pins level.
On top of this, is it also not fair for these gifted leaders who have spent so much time and money attending training, reading books, making notes and preparation not to receive any monetary reward for their time and effort? By the way, how many good MLM speakers are famous enough to command a speaking fee? Think about the price, the time, the hard work a leader must have paid to be a speaker and the talent and charisma they must have to make people want to pay and listen to them.
For me to travel from Taiwan to the USA or Europe to do a training will normally set my schedule and work back a week. Sometimes I take 2 to 3 days just to adjust my jet lag. So 20,000 Euros for my time is not unreasonable. A Japanese company has offered me US$100,000 for my 2 days training plus 1 day training for their top leaders. Maybe this is unreasonable. (I believe they are trying to buy me to head their company in Taiwan. If that is the case then US$100,000 is really unreasonable. Eddy Chai is not for sale) Another Chinese group (The CEO and President was a downline of mine) offered me US$50,000 to train about 10,000 people. Yes, there is good money to be made in speaking if leaders want to charge and are qualified to charge a speaking fee especially speakers who can train in Chinese. Several of my students are doing well now in China.
2. On my side, I am very fortunate today that I have done well and therefore do not need to make extra on the side to subsidize my income. However, even though the first company I was involved in has a poor compensating program especially for their foreign markets and Taiwan is one of them, I still maintain a policy never to make money from my downlines in this area.
Many people who join MLM do not have very much money and they have joined me because they believe in me and they have entrusted their future to me to help them improve their financial situation. For me to charge a higher price for tickets they have to purchase to attend training that will help them do the business so that I can make a profit is something I refuse to do.
Traveling, food and accommodation are so expensive today. Do not be surprised that even without the added speaker's fee and our effort in keeping the price of our tickets low, there may be distributors who may have to borrow to come to these important events. It is my job as an upline to train them and I have chosen to do it for free and all extra money left over after expenses goes back to the group for future use. This money is never put into my personal account but the account of our group center.
Crosslines who need my help also have downlines who are just as poor as mine. My help to them is also free and the leaders have to do the same if there are any funds left over. Use this money to improve the centers or rewards for achievers etc but never into the pockets of the leaders.
Leaders, the above are 2 options. Make your choice. Any one you choose is right.
Be careful of pyramid scheme companies that force distributors to attend expensive training courses. This is a major source of income for some of them. Law in some countries prohibits this.
